We live in an age defined by control and optimization obsession — the idea that everything can and should be mastered. Yet this fixation on commanding the world actually leaves us more powerless. This lecture explores a striking paradox: as powerlessness accelerates in our society, we have lost the language to speak about it.
Joachim Meier, a psychologist, external lecturer at Aarhus University, and organizational psychologist, examines this existential contradiction through sociology, psychology, philosophy, and theology. The lecture offers not only a diagnosis of contemporary life, but also practical insight into how we can become more receptive to powerlessness — and thereby less damaged by the demand for constant mastery. The ideas are based on Meier's forthcoming book Powerlessness – and the Art of Becoming Powerlessness-Capable (KLIM, 2026).
