Meet authors Anya Mathilde Poulsen and Gunvor Bjerre as they share the story of Bergithe Johannessen – a remarkable Faroese artist who, at just 17 years old, traveled to London to pursue her artistic dreams. In 1925, she became the first Faroese ever admitted to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts' painting school in Copenhagen, a groundbreaking achievement in the art world. Yet her compelling life story has since been largely forgotten.
Through a new book, Poulsen and Bjerre have traced Johannessen's footsteps and reconstructed her fascinating life – encompassing her artistic development, the era in which she lived, and the courageous choices that defined her path. At this event, you will gain insight into her personal journey, her artistic vision, and the courage she displayed in forging her own way. You will also have the opportunity to view a beautiful and previously unseen selection of her watercolor paintings depicting the magnificent nature of the Faroe Islands.
Anya Mathilde Poulsen has published several works about female artists and their stories. Gunvor Bjerre is a journalist and has been instrumental in creating numerous children's programs for DR.
