The Often Herd is a British string band that combines traditional bluegrass with modern, innovative arrangements. Their transatlantic sound is deeply shaped by the characteristic natural and industrial landscapes of Northern England, and the band was named "Best European Bluegrass Band 2018" at the La Roche Bluegrass Festival in France.
Guitarist Rupert Hughes and mandolin player Evan Davies compose music rooted in personal experiences, blended with influences from old-time to psychedelia. Violinist Niles Krieger (born in the USA) and jazz bassist Sam Quintana enhance the band's arrangements with virtuosic instrumental playing. Their music is both daringly modern and reassuringly familiar – they take classical traditions in new directions without losing their essence.
Often Herd impresses both bluegrass purists and listeners with more eclectic musical tastes. Reviewers praise their tight harmonies, dazzling instrumental interplay, and energetic dynamics. For many, their live performance is even more compelling than their recordings.
