Den Jyske Opera's interpretation of Bizet's classic opera Carmen explores the operatic heroine's complex character. Carmen claims to be "free as a bird," yet she ends up seeking out the man she knows will take her life – a tragic contradiction that reflects deeper truths about power, fear, and fate.
Bizet's masterpiece from 1875 unfolds as a brutal analysis of each gender's distinct fear: the man fears ridicule, while the woman fears being beaten to death. With this production, Carmen becomes a symbol for thousands of murdered women – one in five murders in Denmark is committed by a current or former partner. Thus the opera becomes a deeply contemporary cry against violence in intimate relationships.
Plot
Sergeant Don José meets the petty criminal Carmen after a knife fight, where he guards her. She persuades him to let her escape, and he sacrifices his career for her. He joins her gang of outlaws, even though Carmen repeatedly makes it clear their relationship cannot work. When Carmen falls in love with bullfighter Escamillo, Don José realizes his life has been destroyed – he has lost his fiancée, his family, and his job. In desperation, he pursues Carmen, who now sees it as her inescapable fate to meet him again, even though the meeting will be fatal.
Presentation
The opera is sung in Danish with Danish supertitles, so language will not be a barrier to the experience. Director Johanne Holten leads the work with conductor Marit Strindlund, while set designer Gøje Rostrup and lighting designer Michael Breiner create the visual universe.
