Georges Bizet's classical opera Carmen from 1875 is far more than just a musical masterpiece – it is a profound story about power, freedom, and tragic fate. How can Carmen at the beginning of the opera proclaim herself as "free as a bird" when she tragically finds herself forced to try to influence a man whom she fears will take her life?
The opera reveals a fundamental truth: while man's fear is often humiliation, the woman faces a far more existential threat. Thus, Carmen becomes a symbol for the countless women whose deaths we learn about through the news – cases that leave us shocked and seeking answers on how such things could happen at all.
In this debate, we use Bizet's masterpiece as our starting point and explore the fundamental questions surrounding intimate partner violence and femicide. Ph.D. and criminal psychologist Charlotte Kappel and director Johanne Holten, who is behind Den Jyske Opera's current production, discuss the psychological aspects of violent relationships. What goes on mentally in such a situation? What factors make it so difficult to break free? How can seemingly love transform into control and ultimately into violence? Journalist Stine Bolther moderates the conversation, which is underscored by musical excerpts from Carmen performed by singers from Den Jyske Opera.
