How does the immune system affect our mental health and well-being? Depression is among the world's most common mental illnesses, but recent research suggests that we may have overlooked important mechanisms behind the condition. Some episodes of depression may potentially be explained through an overactive immune response and inflammatory states in the body.

Anna Mathia Klawonn, brain researcher and head of a research group at the DANDRITE centre at Aarhus University, combines insights from neuroscience and immunology to map how immune cells and inflammatory substances may contribute to depressive symptoms. She also investigates how new treatment methods can detect and reduce these processes.

The speaker provides an in-depth analysis of current research advances with emphasis on clinical application. Key questions include: How does the immune system exchange signals with the brain? Is it possible to diagnose depression through blood tests? Can future therapy be based on anti-inflammatory approaches, and what role does lifestyle – particularly diet and exercise – play? Gain insight into a new understanding of depression as both a mental illness and a physical disease.

The event is part of the Folk University's knowledge festival Hearts & Minds.
