Meet Mads Ananda Lodahl, Kasey Meehan and other discussants when Dansk PEN and Aarhus Libraries launch the #BannedBooks campaign, focusing on censorship, book bans and freedom of expression. The event includes readings from banned literature, panel discussion and debate on the current situation in Denmark.

The #BannedBooks campaign is based on the American Banned Books Week, which since 1982 has fought against censorship and book bans. This is the second year Dansk PEN runs the campaign in Denmark, and it spans week 41 with emphasis on democracy, freedom of expression and participation.

Panel participants and special perspectives

  • Mille Rode, Secretary General of Dansk PEN, in dialogue with Kasey Meehan, who heads PEN America's Freedom to Read program (participating digitally)
  • Author Mads Ananda Lodahl, known for works about life as an outsider, currently active with the novel GAYLIENATION - George Michael Participates in an Indecent Act
  • Eva Svejvig, Department Head at Favrskov Libraries, sharing experiences from handling political criticism regarding promotion of a children's book about masturbation
  • Marie Østergaard, Library Director for Aarhus Libraries and Chair of the Board for Public Libraries 2030

Before and after the event, visitors can watch the documentary film 'The Librarians', which tells about American librarians in their role as important champions for democracy and freedom of expression. The film is shown at 13:00-14:30 and 16:30-18:00.
