Where are the boundaries for EU involvement in gender equality? This debate explores what role the EU should play in advancing equality – and how responsibility should be divided between European and national policy.
The background is the EU's growing focus on gender equality through rules on pay transparency, gender quotas, and combating violence against women. But member states strongly disagree on where the line should be drawn. Denmark, Hungary, and Poland are among those critical of the EU's involvement in issues such as family policy, parental leave, and social rights, traditionally considered national matters.
The debate examines how far Europe has come on gender equality – where the EU has achieved results and what challenges remain. We discuss the current situation in Denmark and the EU, and we focus on questions such as: What responsibility does the EU have toward member states? How should this work be organized going forward? And how do we ensure real change across borders?
