The Hassan Family is a theatrical adaptation of Steffen Stubager's award-winning 2024 book, in which Yahya Hassan's mother and four siblings – Kawther, Khadeeja, Abd Al-Salam and Abdullah – tell their story for the first time. The production explores sibling love, family trauma, and the void left by Yahya Hassan's death in 2020. Through their eyes, the story unfolds of growing up in the Trillegården housing estate near Aarhus – a journey marked by refugee trauma, family violence, social failures, and a search for a foothold in the face of parallel societies and Danish realities that are rarely given a place on stage.
Director Sargun Oshana, an award-winning Iraqi-Danish filmmaker, brings this untold reality to life. Yahya's four siblings are played by Ellaha Lack, Zere Celik, Arian Kashef and Wahid Sui, while Kurdish singer and musician Rezwan Taha composes music and songs and performs as Yahya's mother, Hanan. The production is touring the country in November and December. Experience it at a theatre near you.
