What is pain, and why can it become chronic? This lecture explores the biology of pain through a conversation between pain science professor Thomas Graven-Nielsen from Aalborg University and host Christian Cherry. The topic is particularly relevant since approximately one-fifth of Danish adults live with chronic pain, which affects their daily life, quality of life, and mental well-being.
You will gain insight into how pain functions as both an important alarm system and a deeply personal experience that differs from person to person. The lecture addresses what happens in the nervous system during pain, how modern technology can measure and better understand pain experiences, and what treatment options exist today. Among the fascinating topics are future perspectives such as brain stimulation for relief of chronic pain. As a special activity, simple demonstrations of how pain can be measured and quantified are included.
