Cellist Janne Fredens and pianist Søren Rastogi celebrate the release of the album RESURGENCE with a special concert presenting works by Russian composer Leokadiya Kashperova (1872-1940). The first complete recording of her two cello sonatas is brought to life in the Chamber Music Hall at Det Jyske Musikkonservatorium.
Kashperova was a highly respected pianist and composer in her time – a student of Anton Rubinstein and later teacher of young Igor Stravinsky. After the Russian Revolution, her music nearly vanished from concert halls. Today her works are experiencing a remarkable rediscovery, including through BBC Radio 3 and performances by orchestras such as BBC Symphony Orchestra and Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin.
The sonatas reveal musical connections to Brahms, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff, while presenting a distinctive and powerful compositional voice. Fredens and Rastogi have engaged intensively with these works over eighteen months, including as part of the FOKU project at Det Jyske Musikkonservatorium.
Program
The concert combines excerpts from the sonatas with two informative lectures:
- Dr. Graham Griffiths (City St George's, University of London) presents "Leokadiya Kashperova: A New Dawn". He is among the world's leading Kashperova scholars, author of the first Cambridge-published biography, and editor of the Boosey & Hawkes editions of her music.
- Lars Hannibal (guitarist, OUR Recordings) discusses the work of recording, releasing and promoting classical music today – viewed through the lens of the RESURGENCE project.
After the concert, wine and snacks are served, with the opportunity to meet the musicians and discuss the work and recording.
