What does it mean that the world seems more complex and polarized than ever? Folkeuniversitetet and professor of the history of ideas Mikkel Thorup invite you to a series of evening philosophy lectures at Kulturbodega Bellis, where classical thinkers take center stage. In each session, a contemporary question is explored through works by history's great philosophers – from Kant and Marx to Weber, Freud, Orwell, and Judith Shklar. The idea is that by learning from their conclusions during previous crisis periods, we can better understand our own era.
This evening, we examine Max Weber's legendary essay Politics as a Vocation from 1919. Written during the political turbulence following World War I, Weber analyzes mass circulation, the power of propaganda, and politics as a professional pursuit. Together, we explore how the relationship between politics, media, and the broader population has evolved since Weber's time – and how urgent his questions remain. It will be an evening with space for reflection and shared conversation over refreshments in a pleasant atmosphere.
