In a time of rising polarization and societal uncertainty, the Folk University and intellectual historian Mikkel Thorup invite you to a series of philosophical evening lectures at Kulturbodega Bellis. Each evening explores current questions through historical philosophical texts from major thinkers such as Kant, Marx, Weber, Freud, Orwell, and Judith Shklar – to understand how previous generations managed their times of crisis, and what their insights can teach us today.
This evening's theme concerns the return of right-wing extremism. Drawing on Sigmund Freud's work Civilization and Its Discontents from 1929 – written as Europe moved toward fascism – we examine the tension between human instincts and society's demands. We analyze how conflicts are increasingly interpreted as culture wars, and what consequences this has for our ability to live together.
