Folkeuniversitetet and Professor of the History of Ideas Mikkel Thorup invite you to a series of philosophical evening lectures at Kulturbodega Bellis. The events explore current societal challenges through works by classical thinkers from Kant, Marx and Weber to Freud, Orwell and Judith Shklar. Each evening is based on a contemporary question and a historical text, offering an opportunity to see how earlier generations navigated their own times of crisis and what relevant insights they can contribute today.
The upcoming evening focuses on Sigmund Freud's work Civilization and Its Discontents from 1929, written as Europe moved toward fascism and world war. Drawing on Freud's examination of the tension between human drives and society's demands, we analyse what happens when conflicts are increasingly interpreted as culture wars – and what consequences this has for our ability to coexist. The event is an opportunity to pause, reflect together and debate the times we live in, over a drink in pleasant company.
