What is it that fundamentally characterizes our world right now? In an era filled with uncertainty, division, radical transformations, and shifts in power, the Folk University presents together with intellectual historian Mikkel Thorup a series of philosophical after-work evenings at Kulturbodega Bellis. Here, classic texts from pivotal thinkers are drawn upon to illuminate the present day. Each evening stems from a pressing contemporary issue, combined with works written in earlier critical periods – among others Kant, Marx, Weber, Freud, Orwell, and Judith Shklar.
This first evening focuses on Immanuel Kant's iconic essay "What is Enlightenment?" from 1784, where he examined the Enlightenment era's break with tradition and emphasis on reason. The central question becomes: Have Enlightenment ideals endured to our days, or do we find ourselves rather in a period of cultural and intellectual decline? An evening to pause, reflect together, and contemplate the time we live in – all in cozy surroundings with a beer or a soft drink.
The event is the first in a Tuesday series running from week 43 until mid-December (except 24 November). Other lectures in the series address various philosophical themes and historical texts.
