Two forward-thinking sonic explorers meet for an exceptional evening of experimental and improvisational performance. Horse Lords, the Baltimore-based ensemble known for their genre-defying approach to instrumental music, present their distinctive blend of rhythm, noise, and compositional ambition. Formed in 2010 from the avant-garde collective Teeth Mountain, the quartet—featuring drums, guitar, bass, and alto saxophone—has spent sixteen years challenging conventions across ten studio albums and extensive international touring. Their collaborations range from working with Berlin composer Arnold Dreyblatt to interpreting Julius Eastman's compositions with an 11-piece ensemble at major festivals.
Maria Chávez, a Lima-born sound artist and abstract turntablist based in New York, brings her own innovative practice rooted in Deep Listening—the embodied listening methodology developed by her late mentor Pauline Oliveros. Chávez is renowned for her use of the rare RAKE Double Needle turntable technique, which reads two record segments simultaneously, combined with her distinctive approach to sonic sculpture using broken records. Her work spans improvised performance, multi-channel installation, and sound art, garnering support from institutions including MoMA PS1, The Getty, and DOCUMENTA 14. Her foundational 2012 book Of Technique: Chance Procedures on Turntable remains an essential resource for turntablists worldwide.
