Four top-tier Danish jazz musicians unite to celebrate a pivotal chapter in cool jazz history: the legendary collaboration between saxophonist Paul Desmond and guitarist Jim Hall. Their artistic partnership spanned six albums between 1959 and 1965 and established depth, melodic qualities, and intimate expression on the agenda.
Paul Desmond, renowned for his distinctive tone which he himself described as "like a dry martini," made his career as a member of Dave Brubeck's Quartet from 1951 to 1967 – the ensemble behind the jazz classic "Take Five." As his contract forbade recordings with any pianist other than Brubeck, Desmond chose to record his solo albums with Jim Hall's guitar. Their subtle, melodic, and singable approach proved decisive for the development of a refined jazz expression.
The ensemble explores precisely this sensitivity, elegance, and swinging expression through interpretations of pieces from the classic albums. The musicians – Kati Brien on alto saxophone, Jens Christian Kwella on guitar, Stig Thorndyb on double bass, and Kristian Leth on drums – are all seasoned performers on the Danish jazz scene, here united around a shared love of cool jazz.
