This masterclass explores three central figures in German Expressionism through a closer examination of their artistic expression, choice of motifs, and development over time.
The Artists
- Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) – Founding figure of the artist group Die Brücke, known for his expressive urban scenes and later colorful landscape paintings.
- Emil Nolde (1867–1956) – Briefly a member of Die Brücke, renowned for his sensitive portraits and flower motifs in watercolor.
- Käthe Kollwitz (1867–1945) – An artist with an expressive naturalistic formal language who depicted human suffering, despair, and sorrow through iconic drawings and portraits.
The masterclass is led by ARoS' outreach assistant Martin Bjerg Dahl, who holds a bachelor's degree in Aesthetics and Culture with art history as a specialization, and has experience in art historical outreach and lectures.
