Mazaher invites us into the Zar tradition – an ancient spiritual and musical ritual, carried by women through generations in Egypt and other parts of the Middle East. With polyrhythmic drums, singing, dance, and the characteristic tamboura, the ensemble creates an intense sensory experience where music becomes connection and collective movement.
This tour is Mazaher's last, making this concert in Aarhus a special opportunity to experience the Zar tradition presented by some of its last bearers. Musicians Um Sameh, Um Hassan, and Nour El Sabah are among the last active Zar practitioners in Egypt. Zar music draws on three Egyptian forms and functions as a space for release, balance, and spiritual cleansing.
As a warm-up, the music collective Modersmål – based in Gellerup – performs a selected collection of folk songs from their homeland with their choir, baglama, darbuka, harp, and oud.
