Mazaher

Mazaher invites the audience into Zar, an ancient musical and spiritual tradition from Egypt and other parts of the region. With polyrhythmic drums, singing, dance and tamboura, the ensemble creates an intense and sensual space where music becomes a shared experience of connection, trance and movement. This tour is the ensemble’s last, making it a special opportunity to experience the Zar tradition presented by some of its last bearers in Aarhus.

Mazaher is among the few ensembles in which women play the leading role in carrying Zar forward. The musicians Um Sameh, Um Hassan and Nour El Sabah are among the last remaining Zar practitioners in Egypt. Their music draws on three forms of Zar in Egypt: Egyptian or Upper Egyptian Zar, Abul Gheit Zar, and Tamboura or African Zar, with a sound shaped by tamboura, mangour and percussion instruments.
