Experience the full range of the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra in this varied concert under the direction of conductor Ruth Reinhardt. The program showcases the orchestra's diversity from its deepest tones to its broadest sonorities.
The concert opens with Felix Mendelssohn's light and straightforward overture to the operetta Die Heimkehr aus der Fremde — a rarely performed work that provides insight into early Romanticism. Hans Werner Henze's Sonata for Strings brings cold, temperamental icy sounds to the string orchestra and marks the composer's 100th anniversary this year. Jennifer Higdon's Low Brass Concerto, which receives its Danish premiere, moves the orchestra's four deepest brass players from the back row to the front — here demonstrating their lyrical, colorful, and beautiful-sounding qualities. The concert culminates in Mendelssohn's magnificent Symphony No. 3, "Scottish", where dark storms, picturesque sonorities, and long singing lines converge in full Romantic flowering.
