A classic opera film from La Scala's iconic 1986 production of Verdi's masterpiece. The Ethiopian princess Aida is trapped in slavery in Egypt, where she unexpectedly meets her great love: the Egyptian military commander Radamès. His heart is torn between passion and military duty, as Egypt wages war against Aida's homeland.
When Radamès triumphs on the battlefield, he is later accused of treason after helping Aida and her father, King Amonasro, escape. The punishment is to be buried alive. In a heartbreaking conclusion, Aida steals into the tomb to be with him, and they meet death together. Meanwhile, outside, the high priestess Amneris mourns her unfulfilled love.
This renowned production directed by Franco Ronconi is known for its spectacular visual grandeur and almost cinematic approach. With massive crowd scenes – particularly the triumph scene featuring soldiers, slaves, treasures and processions on a monumental scale – it creates an epic atmosphere. Conductor Lorin Maazel leads the La Scala orchestra with dramatic force, and Luciano Pavarotti's portrayal of Radamès is considered among his most significant Verdi roles ever. The cast also includes Maria Chiara and Ghena Dimitrova.
