Experience three classical works in a concert presenting both quiet beauty and dramatic power. The program opens with Arvo Pärt's Silouan's Song, where silence is transformed into pure, deeply felt music filled with spiritual depth.
The centrepiece is Peteris Vasks' violin concerto Distant Light, performed by soloist Aylen Pritchin. This work combines meditation with intense emotional power. Vasks himself called it "nostalgia with a hint of tragedy" — a search for an ideal universe between past and future, memory and hope. Pritchin, a versatile and expressive musician, delivers what could become this year's greatest listening experience.
The finale is Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 11 The Year 1905 — a bitter and violent work that depicts a bloody massacre with extreme force. Anna Akhmatova described it as "white birds under a black sky". This is the first time Aarhus Symphony Orchestra performs this epic symphony, offering both a harrowing and fascinating glimpse into Russian history.
