Participate in this two-day masterclass where you work with the soft limestone 'Grainstone' from Faxe Kalkbrud under the guidance of artist Freja Niemann Lundrup. The material is easy to work with and invites quick form-making using simple tools such as rasps, files, craft knives and sandpaper.
In the workshop, you explore the stone's properties through your own hands and create your own small work – it could be a relief, a sculpture or something in between. There is no right or wrong way to work; the focus is on investigating the material and allowing the form to develop naturally. Lundrup introduces various stone-working techniques and guides you through the entire process. You take your own sculpture home after the course.
Limestone has a fascinating history – formed over millions of years from deposits in an ancient sea. In the workshop, we treat it both as material and as a carrier of geological history, which opens up new narratives.
About the artist
Freja Niemann Lundrup (born 1990) lives and works in Svendborg on Funen. She studied at Hochschule für Künste in Bremen and Det Jyske Kunstakademi in Aarhus (2013-2018). Her artistic practice focuses on the reactions of materials – with the body as a starting point and particular emphasis on impact, handling and transformation. She works primarily sculpturally with stone and is fascinated by the material's own character and the parallels she sees between the stone's and humanity's becoming.
