When mental illness becomes part of a family's everyday life, it affects everyone – not just the person who is ill. Life can become unpredictable and filled with worry, and some children risk being neglected in attempts to keep the family together. This theme evening focuses on how families can see and support each other when mental illness is present.
The concept of the "shadow child" is presented – children who adapt, show consideration, or go unnoticed. Sine and Mathilde, mother and daughter, share their personal experiences from when Mathilde's older sister was diagnosed with schizophrenia. They reflect on what parents can do to be present for both sick and healthy children, and how the family can support one another both internally and through external resources.
Ellen Henriksen from Psykiatriens Hus in Aarhus presents guidance on seeking help and shares practical tools for talking about mental illness at home. Her presentation focuses on strengthening communication, mutual understanding, and emotional support within the family when illness becomes an everyday reality.
