The longest cranial nerve in the body – the vagus nerve – extends from the brain stem to vital organs such as the heart, lungs and intestines. It regulates important bodily functions such as heartbeat, digestion and breathing, while also having profound significance for our mental wellbeing. Current research suggests that the vagus nerve also substantially influences immune system health.

This lecture explores the nerve's function and potential: How does the nerve respond to stimulation, including electrical activation? What role might it play in treating autoimmune diseases and stress, anxiety and depression conditions? And which everyday techniques can strengthen the vagus nerve and promote better health and wellbeing?

The discussion is led by three experts: neurobiologist and ph.d. in health sciences Karen Johanne Pallesen, who specializes in the vagus nerve, stress and recovery; physician and ph.d. student Amanda Hempel Zinglersen from Rigshospitalet, who explores vagus nerve stimulation in people with autoimmune diseases and has conducted a trial with handheld electrical home stimulation; and moderator science journalist Line Friis Frederiksen.

The event is part of the People's University's knowledge festival Hearts & Minds and is offered free of charge.
