The announcement of this year's winners in the 500 Words writing competition celebrates the young authors behind the best stories. All 19 nominees are invited on stage to be honoured, and the two winners are revealed.
500 Words is Denmark's largest nationwide writing competition for children aged 9-14, who write a story of no more than 500 words. This year, a total of 1330 stories were submitted under the theme "Time". The children interpreted the theme in very different ways, but several stories recur: time travel to the future or to historical events, clocks and objects that can stop time, stories about valuing the time we have, being present in the now, time that flies when we enjoy ourselves and crawls when we are bored or go through something terrible. The struggle to arrive on time also features.
The competition is run by Aarhus Bibliotekerne in close collaboration with Dansklærerforeningens Forlag and Brønderslev Forfatterskole, and it has strong partnerships with Gyldendal Uddannelse, Visuel HF in Viborg and Børn og Unge in Aarhus Kommune.
The nominated stories can be seen together with illustrations made by students at Visuel HF in an exhibition at Udsigten in Dokk1 during Albus Festival.
