The Red Gate is a novel that portrays two time periods: the summer at the holiday collective of the same name on Langeland, where the world is in turmoil at the end of the Cold War and adults dream big and celebrate late into the night. The flock of children – especially the friend group consisting of Aske, Gry, and Mona – navigate through yearning days and restless nights on the border between childhood and teenage years. Many years later, the three childhood friends are now adults, yet they still struggle to find their footing in their relationships, family life, or within themselves. When the memory of that fateful last summer at the Red Gate returns, the three find each other again and become each other's anchor in life. The novel explores when one becomes an adult too soon and how childhood can hold us back.
